Senior Isolation
David Fix, Thelma, and Greg Nauman
Volunteering is about more than just delivering a meal.
We are building connections in our community. Many of our seniors live alone and do not use social media. While we are used to getting text messages, reading what everyone is doing on social media, and always being connected with people we know. Our homebound friends can feel left behind and alone. Senior isolation is a big deal and this can cause health problems.
“Nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.”
-article by CDC on social Isolation
For many of our homebound friends our volunteers that delivers their meal is the only person they may see. It helps boost their spirits knowing that a friendly face will be visiting them and bringing a hot meal for them to eat. We are always looking for volunteers as the need for homebound seniors is increasing everyday.
Sign up for our newsletter to stay connected with what we are doing in the community and how you could support us. Also if you are currently volunteering sharing your story helps inspire other people to volunteer and see firsthand the joy in helping our homebound friends.
Here is a recent story from some of our volunteers:
“Coming up on completing our third year of delivering Meals on Wheels.
One of our cherished recipients is Thelma. We look forward to seeing her every Thursday and she makes sure to tell us she looks forward to seeing “her boys”!
Looking for a volunteer position where we guarantee that YOU will receive many blessings?
Call Meals on Wheels of Polk County to volunteer.”
